Seven Best Nigerian Movies Of The 90s


The Nigerian movie industry is the third movie producing industry in the world, with Hollywood at number one with India's Bollywood ranked at number two. Nollywood have been alive for so long and have given us so many memorable movies for our archives.

Some of those movies are;

  1. Living in bondage: The film was about a man, Andey Okeke (Kenneth Okonkwo) who used his wife for money rituals and had to face terrible consequences.

  2. Domitila: A movie by Zeb Ejiro, that starred Anne Nnjemaze. The story was about the quest for survival among young girls who didn’t have the support of parents and were forced most times, by greed, some other times by peer pressure or need to go into immoral acts.

  3. Most Wanted: A movie by Dozie Oriebu, starring the likes of Regina Askia, Liz Benson, Ebinabo Fabrisima, Antar Laniyan, Genevieve Nnaji, and also Ayo Adesanya. The movie told a story of a group of female thieves that the police couldn’t apprehend because they disguised themselves as men during operations, but it all changes when one of the ladies fall in love with a police officer who later found out his lover was part of the thieves they had been trying hard to get.

  4. Nneka The Pretty Serpent: Released in 1992 and still remains one of Nollywood’s very best. Starring the likes of Ndidi Obi, Eucharia Ananobi, Ngozi Ezeonu and Rita Nzelu, the movie was shot in Igbo and translated in English, Nneka The Pretty was a story of a mermaid who went for married men and didn’t allow any obstacle in her path.

  5. Igodo: The movie starred Pete Edochie, Nobert Young, Sam Dede, Charles Okafor among other stars, directed by Andey Amenechi. The movie showed seven men who were sent into the evil forest to get a cutlass, one that had the power to cut down an evil tree in their village, how they battled different forms of evil and how they survived.

  6. Glamour Girls: Featured the Nollywood girls then in the likes of Liz Benson, Eucharia Ananobi and also Dolly Unachukwu. The story brought to the faces of Nigerians, what young girls did for money and how it ended for them.

  7. Diamond Ring: A 1998 movie that starred Richard Mofe-Damijo, Roland Henshaw, Bimbo Akintola, Tunji Bamishigbin, Liz Benson, Bukky-Ajayi, Teju Babyface among others. The movie was a story of university boys who stole from a dead woman’s coffin. She got furious and began to kill each one of the boys collecting from them what they taken from her but most especially, she wanted her diamond ring.
